Evaluating sources

Look at the following websites. Decide if you think each one contains reliable information, or if you think it is unreliable (you suspect the information is false), biased (the information is given to advance a particular point of view rather than giving objective information), or satirical (it is meant as a joke).

1. http://nationalreport.net/solar-panels-drain-suns-energy-experts-say/

2. http://www.coaleducation.org/q&a/10_reasons_why_coal.htm

3. http://martinlutherking.org/

4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiU-KZ_KADY

Watch the following video that explains how false information spreads quickly nowadays: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-false-news-can-spread-noah-tavlin

What harmful effects can occur from the spread misinformation? Name some examples (use your own imagination to think of what could go wrong).

What steps can we take to avoid being fooled by biased or unrealiable sites?

Please answer the questions and comment on at least two other students' posts.

  1. Good morning. I think that number 4 cannot contain reliable information because this site is for watching video ect... and you can collet information with the others. But the effects that can produce misinformation are the bad sites where many people go and do other things such as youtube, facebook, ect... becauses these sites don't require some informations. for avoid being fooled by biased are that we must find the good sites for us to get some information. Thank you very much

  2. You are right, Amadou, you can't trust everything on youtube. Look, however, t the video, and tell us if you believe the information about the pregnant man.

  6. 1- Hi, I think the link 1 contain satirical information because there is many satirical thing on this website. The link 2 for me contain reliable information because I think their analyse are correct. The link 3 is biased about the point of view of people who think like Martin Luther KING. And the last link contain unreliable information for me because youtube is a site where everybody can post what he want.
2-For me the effects that can result for misinformation is the sharing of wrong information. I said that because if someone is not inform he can trust every information that come to him even the wrong information. I saw that during the crisis in 2011 in Ivory Coast because at this time the news was stopped to spread information on the paper news (like fratenité matin, etc) so those who didn't have TV or Internet trusted all information that came to us even the wrong information like the catch of one minister etc.
3-To avoid being fooled by biased or unreliable sites I think we have to grade the sites about the reliable of the site's information; and with that we will know better before read information on the sites.

  7. Hello all, remember that in class, I advised you to Google information on each of the sites and their sponsors. This will help you judge if they are reliable or not.

  8. 1- for the first link/ there are many informations but they are not reliable. The link two , the informations can be true but the company can also say false things about them. The third link his fake because the site is supposed to be about the song of Nelson Mandela but they talk about somethingelse. The fourth link is prank and can not be trust because a man can not b e pregnant.
2-if maybe for an assignment, people have spread informations about something, they can get bad mark. And also have a wrong knowledge.
3- for avoiding being fooled by biased siktes, we just need to allow researchers or people who have good informations to post or create websites.

  9. 1- Hi. for me the first website contains satirical information because most of the things it say are satirical. For the second website, it contains biased information because it only gives reasons why coal is a good energy source. The third website contains reliable information because Martin Luther King is a known personality and it can't lie about him. The fourth website contains unreliable information because it is a videos website where everybody can post what he wants.
2- For me the spread misinformation can create the chaos in the population. For example, recently, after the attack on the beach at Grand-Bassam, a message circulated and saying that the Friday will be a black Friday or many people will die. However, friday is passed and nothing happened. Because of this message many people were afraid to go outside.
3- For me we must create officials websites run by specialized people and delete all the websites that propagated false information

  10. 1. According to me all information’s are reliable

    2. Nowadays false information spread quickly because persons gave what they think to the public for buying their product and support their ideas without proof by facebook by twitter by newspaper which are mostly use by public everyday.

    3. The spread misinformation is bad for someone living in the world because he doesn’t know how go persons around to him and he doesn’t know anything in actuality real in the world and his evolution. By example if there are one terrorist attack it is hard for someone who misinformation to avoid this attack if it is near to him.

    4. The steps can we take to avoid being fooled by biased or unreliable sites are take care and verify this information and pay attention at each word and sentence wrote for make sure that it is true.
